Here is a
list of supplies needed:
-
4
½ yards total of fabric (I used 2 ¼ yards each of two coordinating prints by
Michael Miller It’s a Shore Thing and Ahoy Matey.)
-
Cutting
mat, ruler and rotary cutter
-
12
small grommets (There were only 10 grommets per package, so I had to get two – one kit
plus 10 extra grommets.)
Let’s get
started! Before you start cutting and
sewing, please read through all the steps first. These instructions are for a 72” x 72” shower
curtain. But please be sure to measure your
space first and make any adjustments necessary.
(Note: I failed to follow my own advice and while it turned out okay, I
would have liked it a little longer.)
Fold main
fabric print in half, selvage to selvage, and cut two panels 60” long. **If you choose a
geometrical pattern like I did, you will need to make sure the pattern will
line up! For the top and bottom pieces, trim the cut ends of the other
fabric so they are straight. Then fold in half cut end to cut end. Cut a
5”W x 76”L strip for the top and a 25”W x 76”L strip for the bottom.
1. Match up the two panels of the
main fabric and sew down the length. (I sewed
down the masts of the boats so you don’t see the seam unless you look
closely.)
2. Trim fabric ½” from the seam and
press open.
3. Stitch ¼” from the seam on both
sides. If needed, trim panel to be 76” wide.
4. Next, attach the top panel
using a ½” seam allowance.
5. Press the top panel up.
6. Fold top over 1/2” and press.
7. Fold
over again to the seam and pin in place.
8. Sew 1/8” from the edge.
9. Press the top panel. Repeat steps 4-9 for the bottom
panel.
12. Follow
the instructions for attaching the grommets. They should be approximately
6.25”apart, with 1.5” to 2” on each side from the edge. Before tracing and
cutting the holes, be sure they are evenly spaced.
